Trip Log (30.9)

It's been a while ~
Well not a LOT has changed i guess, but some things have been occurring since I last posted. Let me split this up into subcategories- so it comes out organized and be less of a rambling blog (although there's nothing wrong with rambling right?)

1. SCHOOL STARTED!

So I've made a temporary timetable for the while, and this is for the 2nd semester for the year (後期)which runs from now until the beginning of February. With just a 2 week mini-break in between for X-mas, new-years and my b'day lol :P STILL haven't been able to get my timetable done yet!! But that is because of a number of reasons; I'll list them out-
  1. The courses I have chosen to take previously when I first filled in the Transfer of Credits (TOC) form were either non-existent, or they clashed with each other. (Therefore, future exchange goers, go get more courses approved if you can!)
  2. There weren't enough classes of the right standard. For example 2nd year Chinese was soo basic... it was like "what is this? where is this? what time is it...?" etc. So it would be too much of a miracle to get that approved by the Chinese Studies headteacher who was adamant on making me get 4.5hrs of class -_- so i decided to drop it (for gender studies actually, which is easily transferable as an extra arts option. We'll see how that goes tomorrow -_-;)
  3. It was too HARD omg. We all (all the exchange students) went to some course called 現代日本社会論 - which is modern society in japan. The lecturer literally just stood in front and talked for 1.5hrs, while referring to a few newspaper articles with a million and one kanji... I pretty much only bothered to translate the titles tho hahaha... So definitely not taking that, and hopefully there are easier subjects in the same field > <
  4. Takes time to get things approved, because I have to exchange information with UNSW via mail- and that is really annoying. Especially when they need me to give them a detailed course summary, and all I have is a Japanese syllabus. (Yes, that means I have to translate everything for them to understand ><) Yeah, but it looks like it on the right track to being approved... I got until the 9th before I need to confirm my subject selection tho.
Apart from that school has been alright!... for these 3 days anyway! For Japanese class there are a few international students from Korea and China, and more older exchange students (2+years in japan) in the seminar class. They're very good, of course. Lots of them have lvl1 JLPT. Some dude has a really annoying way of talking tho... can't get used to it. Sure his Japanese is super, but gah... I wanna go 'Ninja CHOP!' right between the glasses lol

Yeah, and apart from the tutors + their friends, and Saya and Tomoka, haven't really met anyone out of class. Always the bunch of gaijins that walk in the cafeteria and get stared at haha oh well. Also this is the newsletter where we just wrote a simple intro and took photos lol

交流センターnewsletter (Oct '09)

Mhmm that should be it for the school summary

2. FOOD!

Unfortunately,  there has been hardly any cooking progress as I planned. But I am surviving by making basic stuff such as... egg on rice.. or miso soup.. or just frying meat and stuff and eating that with rice... nothing in particular. If I run out stuff in the fridge I just get a pack of instant ramen, toast, or fruit- OH, and tofu. ^^

Stocked up my fridge with about 2000yen worth of food yesterday- such as eggs, chicken, veggies, sausages etc- all good stuff! Couldn't find the cereal in the supermarket I went to last night tho, but I'll survive :P Supermarket food near closing time is discounted by the way, so more night trips and later dinners from now on i guess :P

3. OMG I SPILLED TEA ON MY LAPTOP

Okay, I should have remembered this earlier since it was such a crazy stressful process >< I was drinking one of those green-tea sorts in a .. fairly tall glass next to my computer. Knocked it over, and it went ALL on my keyboard!!  > < I freaked out like crazy, but i did what was necessary to keep it from short circuiting and whatnot. I.e. Force-shutdowning the laptop by holding the power key, pulling out the battery and then tilting the laptop upside down. Also, I turned it on its side, and tea came out of the USB ports on the side!!!! nooo!
So immediate measures, i got a cloth, soaked it in water, and kinda cleaned it up- so at least the keys aren't sticky when it dries (so I thought)... then I left it on the side and used the hairdryer on it for a while. I heard tho that hair-driers can damage you're computer more tho - not sure why (something about static electricity?) but I'll keep that as a note for next time. So after I did that, I put it in my laundry basket on its side, and left it to dry until sunset- while I went to sleep because I felt so bad, and was worrying like CRAZY crazy CRAzYYY.

I did try to open it, but the screws are so tight on- and i couldn't get the cover off. Also a bit scared that the warranty might be void if i did open it (but I'm not even sure if it is covered for accidental spillage). I really wanted to clean the insides after seeing stuff come out the usb ports... > <

Well 2 days later I turned it on to see if was working *crossing my fingers* It turned on!! :D Bit skeptical still because the keys which the tea fell on are now a bit hmm... sticky. As in it makes a weird  plastic-y. crunchy noise when I press slowly down on them (especially the space bar). But other than that, I've been wary of overheating? Because the tea reside might burn or something??? I don't know... all I'm doing is being cautious, and paranoid - and perhaps smart.

SO, it is alive and I am now blogging on it. But just in case, I'm shutting it down and letting it cool off every 2 hours of usage. Which I can keep a pretty good monitor of due to the customisation tool, RAINMETER.

3. UNI'S TORE-NINGU RU-MU

The training room in uni (i.e. the gym) is a pretty run down shack with quite a lot of equipment. Albeit a bit old, and some rusty etc- but still usable. The most important thing is that it is free, and easy to access :) .. and not crowded. Well at least it wasn't crowded today because it was raining when I went there with Rui and Ingma ... and found Jesse training by himself in an empty gym hahahahaha. Dude, stop running off on your own :P

4. KEITAI!

Yay btw I got my keitai, so if you need to contact me desperately here- email me on wingking[at]softbank.ne.jp please :) It goes directly to my mobile, so I'll get it. However, I did try to email myself from gmail, and it arrived after 10 mins... I guess the delay varies a lot. It was really weird too because I sent 2 emails, and the 2nd one I sent arrived about 2 minutes before the first one i sent (although they were both late/delayed wtv.)

All is good. Can use internet on it, but I will refrain from doing so too much due to costs- but as you would know, you can do plenty of stuff on a jap phone. Oh yeah, by the way, this is TOMOKA's old vodaphone- which she let me have because it was .. old! Thanks soooo much Tomoka :D It's not even that worn down, I just had to replace the battery pack which was kinda gettin distorted and big o_O; So glad I got one tho, saved me a lot of money! ^^

So- a few things you can do. You can scan the docomo(?) barcode, which is the weird box-type barcode you see now and again. And what that is, is you take a picture of the barcode with your 'scanner', and then it comes up with information- such as contact details, or a url etc. Also, since lots of people have long long emails, and not just their phone number details- people exchange phone numbers via infrared! Which may be good for knowing who has your contact details (security measure) :P - but yeah, feel free to email me whenever, as long as you don't spam me with junk >:( - and only if i know you, of course :P

The process in itself was a bit bothersome- took a good 2 hours, because there was something wrong with some machine -_- But Tomoka was with me and kept me company while we waited the long wait- thanks again Tomoka!

But still good to eat :)

My place

★While I was at it, I decided to snap various things around the place ★

 Fruit Basket =]

Food Storage + Boiler + Toaster + Microwave + Fridge

Inside the fridge ~
(Many litres of tea haha)

Kitchen area

 Convenient breakfast choice =]

My very super-awesome grammar dictionary!
¥2800

Argh super glue of DEATH

SO a long while ago back when I first when to Kahma, I bought a little cheap-ish towel rack for the kitchen. When I took it home, and removed it from its packaging- I made a mistake and didn't take out the adhesive tape properly, and it folded onto itself. When I tried separating it, it snapped. FML
So, what i did was use the remaining adhesive and put it on- and see how it would work. 5 mins later, BANG. It fell down without a towel on the rack.

There happened to be a roll of masking tape in my room... so what did I do? I taped it up with masking tape- very ugly, but it took a lot of surface area so I thought it would hold... NUP! It didn't last 2 hours... I didnt have any choice, or any other options so... from that day on I kept retaping it to the cupboard...

As a result of this, I decided to get go to the 24hr store to get some SUPER GLUE--- and about 5000 yen worth of other stuff including kitchen appliances, hooks and other furnishings ~ also a really cheap pillow which I got for around 600 yen (The pillow they gave us was horrible, small and hard-because it had plastic bits as the filling =/).

Pillow comparison =]

Anyway, the glue wasn't just for the towel rack- because that would be stupid because the glue cost as much as the rack did in the first place- but my reasoning was that if one of my hooks fell down, I could glue it back up- (because I wanted to hang pots and cutting boards on the wall- although the hook's specifications said that it could hold a max of 2kgs... so I was pushing it..).
Looks like it is working without the superglue tho!

Yeah, so when I got back I opened the pack of super glue! I read the back, and followed the instructions. MAN the instructions were horribly hard for super glue -_- There was a special casing, where you had to turn it and you gotta do all this stuff just to open it... and then you have to close it properly as well- overwhelmed by the complexity I tried opening it.. and started squeezing.. IT DIDN'T COME OUT~ Then, it started to drip out the side ! ><

So yeah, now the glue is hardened and I can't use the lid anymore because the hole is blocked. But I can still unscrew the nozzle to apply the glue later, so it is not totally useless.
BUT WHY CAN'T IT JUST BE A SIMPLE SUPER GLUE FFS- why do they have to go all complicated on the packaging ...

Okay, I just fail.
But it looks... fine now! I'll tell you if it falls tonight -_- .. Too scared to put the towel on yet... in case it hasn't dried or anything..

Graarrr... lots dripped on my hands too... I used to use sandpaper to get it off in Aus... no idea how now...

Anyway made my first non-instant-noodle meal today. lol
Jesse stole my rice cooker and isn't answering the door grr.. so i had to use a pot for the rice... cooked a bit too much rice too ><

Sucks now, but things will get better as the year progresses. *Teriyaki Chicken*

Trip Log 19-21日

G'day all! How've you all been... come on more comments please!! otherwise I'll lose motivation to keep this thing updated :(

Well I don't think I'll keep things in chronological order because I pretty much forgot already but I'll just let you know a few more things going on.
For the past 2 days I haven't been going out much of the dormitory because to be honest, I have nothing to do and no-one to roam with. Also, I really really really need a bike otherwise I'd have to keep catching the subway to get anywhere- which is pretty expensive... pretty much going from Wynyard to Central- walkable but that takes time so some train it. Therefore I need a bike. lol

The other day we met some German guys that like us, have come to stay here for a year as an exchange student at NCU. Two of them are German Germans, one is a Japanese person brought up in Germany. Don't know how to spell their names so I'm not going to try and then make a mistake - because that'd be embarrassing. Anyway, we went shopping with them- and first thing we did was walk to a bike shop. There were really really cheap bikes of pretty good value going for 7000 yen each, but there were only 3. Being the ..uh gentleman I am, I stepped back and let them buy the bikes. The kanrinin said that she might have a bike available... so I thought I'd wait until I talk with her first. However, OH NO its "Silver week" or something. So everyone is on a 3-4 day holiday -__- ... so she'll be back on Thursday or something. So far I have no idea how I can get in touch with her, because there is no email or anything put on the noticeboard downstairs. I.e. I gotta wait til Thursday before I can even talk to her... *sigh*

Then we went to Kahma again, and I bought a pretty large drawer, because I need more storage space for food -(acting as a sort of mini-pantry), because the shelves were full of other stuff already. They were all riding their bikes with shopping in their backpacks and bike baskets... and I was walking/running trying to keep up with them. Sucks heaps!

Then later that day I think I went to a kind of event that Jesse's church had. Where some New Zealanders were doing some missionary work- pretty fun night. Met lots of cool people too-! Too bad I didn't take any photos tho.

Oh also, the night before we met some of Sayaka's friends- Yusuke and Tomoka. Who we had some dinner with at some Non-Japanese restaurant. lol- don't even know what type of restaurant it was. They had italian food, mexican food, wine, cocktails- a mix!

It's weird how my memory just comes flowing back if i blog about things backwards- haha... hope the structure isn't too confusing for everyone. Unfortunately concerning photos this round, you'll have to refer to facebook. lol

Also uni will be starting soon, and various things need to be done. For one, I need to sort out the class clashes (there are a lot of them) and then after I do that I have to email UNSW and get the people there to help me get them all approved so I can guarantee a successful transfer of credits. It is VERY stressful!!! I thought I sorted it out all the way in Australia before I came, but problems appear...such as 2 subjects clashing by being on the same period on the same day, or the fact they don't offer the course to us at all. ><

I found out from ROSE today that there is a card i can get for about 300yen from the international office thing called the 「登録原票記載事項証明書」 which is apparently something I can use temporarily as a substitute for my Alien Registration Card to get my bank account and phone. But then again, its still Silver week, so I doubt they'd be open. I don't want to go there by subway to get there and find out it is closed... and I can't go by bike BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE ONE! :( Jesse said that he heard from some people that we can't use it, but we'll have to go check it out. Now we know the name of the thing in Japanese, the shop people should be able to understand! lol

Apart from the things going on- I've decided to hop on Cookpad.com and see experiment and see how much I can learn. :P Haven't done anything yet tho- Got a stock of instant noodles, bananas and bread etc to last me for a few more days just in case. If anyone wants to help me scan for easy and good-looking recipes; go ahead :) Oh it's all in Japanese tho.

Going for jogs and doin' a bit of indoor exercise too- just so that the junky stuff doesn't get too me.
That's it for now. Signin' out~

Trip Log (15-18/9)

Hey ~ I'm at the dorm at Nagoya now- all unpacked, and things organised, and necessities bought! good2go :)

What we need now is the Alien Registration Card 外国人登録証明書 (which I applied for yesterday with Jesse). But that would take a  few weeks before we can get the actual card... which is kind of a necessity when it comes to setting up a bank account in order to transfer money and do direct debit for bills, and setting up a mobile phone contract. I NEED a phone if I do get horribly lost- there won't be any way anyone can contact me, and I can't call out if I'm out on the street in a phone-less area.

Upon arrival at Nagoya station the first time- I was supposed to meet SAYAKA who would help me get to the dormitory, but when I arrived by bus- (which was about 10 mins later than scheduled), I scanned the whole station and couldn't find her! I pulled a desperate-and-stranded-traveler and attempted to ask people nicely whether or not I could borrow their mobile phones to make a phone-call. Got brushed away several times. And after I successfully convinced someone to let me make one call... no one picked up... (maybe i dialed the wrong number or something - because it was written in my little notepad). I didn't want to make the poor stranger wait any longer so I just gave it back, did a little bow and walked away lugging my suitcase. It was running pretty late, and I HAD to get to the dorm before 2:30pm, because the 管理人 manager of the dorm goes home at that time - so unfortunately unsuccessfully meeting up with Sayaka, I made my way to the Dorm alone... and Sayaka came and met me there after apparently waiting for an hour > < SO SORRY!

I finally got to the dorm thanks to SAORI! (who I made good friends with on the plane to Osaka)- She helped me a LOT by helping me translate a lot of things- and get things sorted in my head. After we got off the plane we met up with her friend TAKASHI, who I thought was Takeshi at first, and who shouted us konamon - and Takashi is so nice! soo soo nice- he helped upgrade my ticket on the Nankai line to a reserved seat- and he also bought tickets for saori and him to see me off from the platform (wow those existed?)

So here is Saori-chan

And here is Takashi

Btw... If you noticed I had a whistle on my neck, and thought that was strange... That is because I had lost my voice after doin uh.. things last week, and I needed a way to get people's attention... especially if someone rolls me and I need to call for help. But on that note, these 2 were so kind ^ they didn't even care that I sounded so so horrible~

So anyway, moral of the first story was that it is essential that I have a mobile! lol

--- Moving on. So about Hotel Sun Plaza. Looks NOTHING like the pictures they posted up. But now seeing it in real life, I understand why it was only 20 bucks for the night. Heres some of the 'true photos'

So its a tiny 3 tatami mat room. Smells horrible - but not of tobacco at least. Sleep on the floor. Hard pillow. Cracked window. Right next to the station .. like literally commuters can see me, hear me if i shout, and I can prolly hit one of them if I threw something out of the window hehe. So yes, it was noisy as well. BUT never-the-less an interesting experience.
They had a small TV tho! which was good.. so I watched that until about 2am... just making my money's worth haha :P They had lots of channels but some didn't have very good reception. There was korean shows on too (with japanese subs)- but yeah... didn't watch that.

The next morning, got up early- went down to the conbini and bought a piece of bread and an onigiri for breakie, and made my way up to the JR line... there wasn't any lifts all the way up so I had to struggle up the stairs with my suitcase :( ... then I took a 3 hr bus ride to Nagoya... and that links up with the above story.

---- So the when I arrived the dorm! I told the kanri nin that SIN-NING left me some stuff in her old room. Hahah, so she took me up there- and I pretty much cleared it out and took everything :P THANKS SOO MUCH SIN-NING~ you rock xD! There was a suspicious lighter and lots of candles up in the top shelf tho... whats that for? lol

Anyway I packed it and carried it down to my room. And there were tonnes of stuff in my room too! :D So yeah, Jesse got the short end of the stick in regards to that- but I'm totally willing to share. The person before me seems to be quite the cook tho. Tonnes of spices, pots, graters, and cooking gear left here- so as soon as I get the stove fixed (or get a new one) I can go attempt something haha. Also I received a hand-held-vacuum, small rice cooker, 2 kettles, and a BED omg (everyone else just has a futon!)- and a lot of stuff here and there.Pretty much walked into a santa's workshop, but yeah... the support in the middle of the bed is a bit broken, so I have to do some sort of repairs here... and I spent a lot of time cleaning to get it to the condition it is in now. Also I dropped a glass on the floor in the dorm... by accident of course.. and it shattered. I've done my best to clean it up... and all, but far out- TINY TINY shards keep appearing > < - like stuck to my foot or something - but nothing serious because I have tweezers. I've gotten down really close many times just to check for glass... Its tough work *nod*

Me, Sayaka and Jesse also went to the NCU campus to meet the Senseis at the international exchange center- and that was where I managed to get on the internet... but, really hate the japanese keyboard layout- makes me keep mistyping stuff. :( Walking to the uni is such a pain... 30 mins each way. I really want a cheap cheap bike. And to me, even tho I've gone a few times, I don't have the confidence to make the whole trip by myself without getting lost. lol

Yesterday we went shopping at Kahma or whatever its called. It is such a big super-mart- and it had pretty much everything we needed. Also headed to Sakae to buy some electrical plugs, hairdryer and what-not. The straightener I brought from home doesn't seem to work even tho it says 100-240V, dodgy. But I don't really need that anyway.

Hopefully I can get out and meet some more people soon- haven't even met people from this dorm... they don't really come out that much. But yes, orientation is next week- looking forward to it ! :)

Anyway guys- that's all for now, i'll keep you all updated now and again =]

oh oh, and p.s.,- i'm officially a genius. :P ('Video on Demand' entertainment unit that jetstar provided)

4hrs before take-off-!

So here I am waking up in the middle of the night waiting to get out of the house...
A bit too early, maybe can fit in another hour sleep...

my voice is still gone from too much partying... but slowly recovering...
zzzz

Anyway! I'm off to Osaka soon! I'll keep you guys updated okaaay :)

Just had a weird dream about getting my money taken away by all these people. This group of evil looking bandits took a whole group of people hostage (including me) and searched our suitcases for money... and then proceeded to search every part of us. > < Well at least it got me a whole more cautious about where my money is! lol. Actually, I remember that I even tried to swim away (in a random expanse of water), with the paper money folded in my pocket getting soaked, because I somehow knew that I could still make the slowly disintegrating paper-mache-looking blob into usable money...*sigh*...  weird dream....

Okay back to sleep...

Planning what to do after arriving KIX (Kansai International Aiport 関西国際空港(関空))

Its time I start getting things straight, and beginning planning exactly what I should do! (...At least until I end up at the dormitory, where people can start guiding me and teaching me things) So in the past 2 days I have consulted Hana-chan, and she has helped me figure what I should do in order to get to Nagoya in one piece... which might sound pretty basic I guess, but it is a long way... lol Thanks Hana-chan!

Using internet booking sites such as Hostel World and Hostels.com, I did a bit of research to find which are the cheapest alternatives to get to Nagoya from KIX. Cheapest is best (as a true asian would say) and the cheapest price the sites offered was 1800yen for one night (which atm is about $20AUD!) Very cheap :) And one of these is Hotel Sun Plaza which is located in Shinimamiya 新今宮, and is apparently 0 minutes walk from the station! To book all we need is a 10% down payment by credit card, which is only like 2-3bux, but if we don't end up arriving at the hostel, they will charge the full amount of the first night on that card. There are a few drawbacks as stated in the number of complaints within some of the reviews, but I really don't expect much.  I'll be arriving late, and checkout is by 9am ... all I need is a location where I won't get lost, a bed, and a safe-ish place to keep my luggage and all.Maybe the biggest issue is me getting rolled on the street >< s

Just to keep you guys updated, I'll just share with you all that I know... this will involve a bit of cut-and-paste;)

Sun Plaza Facilities summary

  • Breakfast Not Included
  • Internet Access (¥100 for 15 minutes)
  • Web Access in Lobby - wtf isn't what the point above just said??
  • TV
  • Refrigerator
  • Hairdryer for Hire
  • Air Conditioning
  • Elevator
  • Only accept cash
  • No room service
  • ¥1000 security money (you give it to them when you check-in, and they'll give it back to you when you check-out)
  • 9am check-out, which you can extend until 12pm for ¥500. . . which is about 1/4 of the original 1-night private room price -_- lol, sleeping in now has its cost
  • and lol. "Sorry, stuffs can't speak English!"

Here are some photos (taken from Hostel World)

the 2nd  picture is apparently a "Large bath ( men's section ) overlooking Tsutenkaku"

I also grabbed some more screenshots from Google Earth like last time.
So what I do is come out of the Nankai Koya Line from the west exit and start walking east along the main road until I see the some building which looks like the above picture on the right hand side.. I'm set!

Here is a bit of an overview of Osaka for those who don't really know the geography (like me, until I did my research) =]

So here's the plan (times are approximate) .. and it may change :O

15/9
Arrive KIX (if there are no delays)
Buy a train ticket and from KIX take a train to Shinimamiya Station 新今宮駅 via the Nankai Koya Line
Arrive Shinimamiya, go to Hotel Sun Plaza

16/9
Check Out, and head back to the station... and buy a ticket to Osaka Station
Buy a bus ticket to Nagoya...
Get someone to come pick me up when i get there around 1pm... I hope -or just ask around when I get there

AUD-->YEN

Okay this arvo I went by Bankwest, deposited a cheque and withdrew about $2700 cash... Spent a good hour walking around paranoid, and checking my pocket for the cash envelope every 20 seconds to make sure it was still there-!

Anyway, Tora-tora (short for Travel & Travel) is pretty easy to find. You can actually get through to 303 Pitt street by going straight through Townhall's woolies, because there's a little back entrance... and from there you can take a lift up the 4th floor.

First impression... Japanese backpacker hideout! lol Could also tell by the people with the weird curly perms walking around the area too :P It is full of cheap paper advertising stuck on walls and stuff, and there are a lot of people inside- as well as computers... didn't explore very deeply tho.
Anyway, it was so simple - all I had to do was bring cash in and change it over the counter. Took about 5 minutes. Nothing fancy. She actually just got a calculator out, calculated it, and handed me the Yen- eaaasy. Umm... I guess they expect the customers to speak Japanese tho? But I'm sure they can speak english fine... So! I felt a bit safer with my money in foreign currency, but still cautious... because if someone robbed me, what use will they have for yen? Maybe they'll be lazy robbers and just give it back? ?? ? haha ^^; (naive, i know)

...... by the way, last night I left my black gortex jacket out somewhere! I went back to Civic today, and then to the *something* Hotel to see if they had it kept in lost property or something... but nothing! It's very expensive so I'm going to keep searching for it... where else could it be... hmm...

Kana and Erika wore it... and I'm sure it was lost sometime after French Riviera...and I think i wasn't wearing it most of the night...

Help!!

p.s. Thanks for the steak today Riku :)

2 weeks before departure~

Hi everybody!

Welcome to my blog! I will be posting entries on now and again just to update people on whats going on while I am away from home. Also, I'll try and limit this as much as possible to things which are relevant to the exchange, so that future-exchange-goers will be able to get the most out of this blog. I'll do my best to make this blog as useful as possible. For those who are unable to read Japanese- I'm sorry, but I will be posting in Japanese sometimes as well; just for much-needed practice! Don't worry too much, because I will only do that if I have tonnes of spare time on my hands.

Just a little background introduction: I am a 3rd year UNSW student, doing a double degree of Commerce and Arts with 2x double majors- and I will be going on exchange to Nagoya City University 名古屋市立大学 in the Showa Province 昭和区 for a duration of 1 year starting from September 2009. I will be accompanied by only one other student from UNSW, Jesse Noble. Also, George Chen will be joining us in the beginning of 2010. I'll be staying in a dormitory just on the other side of town from the campus that I will be commuting to, in Room 310 (if anyone feels the need to stalk me).

The dormitory rules are as follows:

1. No visitors (includes family members or friends) are allowed to stay overnight in the dormitory.

Outsiders are permitted to visit during the times between 9:00am-9:00pm. They must return to their own residence and leave the dormitory when this time ends. They will be banned from entering the dormitory if they do not keep to this regulation.

2. No smoking is allowed in the rooms. Please DO NOT smoke. If you can not bear smoking, then please smoke at the balcony or outside the dormitory. Make sure to carry portable ash tray at all times and do not litter your cigarette butts on the streets, at a balcony or inside the building etc.

3. In regards to prevention of any accidents and for hygienical purposes, please make every effort in maintaining a pleasant environment within the dormitory. Please classify your garbage properly and make sure to dump on a designated date at designated dumping sites. For details, please refer to the booklet on ‘The nature and how to classify & dispose garbage’ which we handed to you with the Center guidance booklet. If you are still not sure on how to classify your garbage, you may ask help from the administrator or adviser.

At the moment, I haven't started packing yet- or bought any yen, or done anything really. All I have really done in preparation of my one year in Nagoya consists of pretty much...
  • Getting my Student Visa on my passport on my second visit (after going to the consulate for first time w/out a passport -_-)
  •  Making a 'what-to-bring' list, which is just about 2 A4 pages of pretty useless junk such as toothbrushes, clothes etc...

  • Asking numerous people including workmates at Sushi-ya, Japanese friends and people who have previously been on exchange to Japan about various things such as problems which I may encounter. (What mobile companies are best, what are the biggest banks, how super-cheap the convenience-store food is etc:P) It is/was interrogation but they didn't cringe too much (hopefully)! A big thanks to all those people that helped me out when I desperately relied on you for information!!- Especially Sin Ning, Hana, Jesse, Takeko, and Kevin! I appreciate it this much
(------------------------------------------------------------) (its a lot, okay) hehe
  • Downloading Google Earth and marking out all the important places around where I will be. First time using this, so I found it pretty awesome... They even had shop names, hospitals and schools marked out! All I needed to do was to type the address or the name of the train station, and *whala!* it zooms towards a satellite image of the location ^^ There's an option for you to make all the buildings 3D, but it seems that that uses up a lot of bandwidth just loading. (trying to be a bit conservative with the internet since we got capped a bit early last month...)
Actually if I ever figure it out, I'll post the map onto here- just for reference :)
... Is that even possible?? Sorry- pretty new to this ^^:
edit: Okay this is a satellite photo of my dorm taken from Google Earth-  its right next to the water... drainage system or river? (no idea)

From directly above...

and this is just a snapshot of the Showa-Province. My campus 「人文社会学部」 is (D), and the dorm is the yellow pin on the right- a bit of a walk...

Yeah so... Apparently I need about ¥200-300k cash to last me the first 2 months while I figure out what is going on and how on earth I set up a Japanese bank account so I can beam the money over by 'telegraphic transfer'(?)... o_o
But, at least that amount doesn't need to cover the costs of a new laptop since I bought a new Acer Aspire 5536 already from JB-HiFi after my last one started crashing and causing drama. It is a pretty cheap computer, but good bang for the buck- however I won't be playing any games on it just in case it overheats and breaks down like my old one...
Getting back on track, through word-of-mouth, I have heard that the best method to get Yen is to go to Tora-tora (www.tora-tora.net), and KDB - which I believe is a Korean bank...(I remembered the acronym as Ken Does Boxing.. even tho i don't lol) So, I'll go there to check it out sometime this week or next week...

Besides that I got plenty of things to do before I go...
  • Tax Return (It's almost due and I can't be bothered doing it manually ><)
  • Clean up room
  • Finish off P90X
  • Get a Japanese adapter (should I get one here, or in Japan?)
  • Last-minute catch up with friends
  • Quit my job (yay!^^)
and i'm sure there's more...

Also, since this is my first blog- If there are any of you out there that can help me set up this page, please, help me set up this page. LoL
Here are a few links that I got from an e-mail from Yokoyama Megumi (横山恵) the other day, which may or may not be of interest to you- but I'll just post it up here anyway:
